For education

Reading help for every student.

RiddR reads any text on the web aloud, in 46 languages. It is free, open source and needs no account, so a whole class can start in the time it takes to install an extension.

In the classroom

Three steps. Nothing to learn.

No new platform and no copy and paste. RiddR sits in the Chrome toolbar and reads whatever a student points it at.

  1. 01

    Select

Highlight any text on a web page: a sentence, a paragraph or the whole chapter.

  2. 02

    Press Alt + R

Or click the RiddR icon, or use the right-click menu. Reading starts right away.

  3. 03

    Listen

Follow along on the page while RiddR reads. A small player gives you pause, stop and replay.

Pause with Alt + P Stop with Alt + S On a Mac, Alt is the Option key.

What it is good for

One small tool, many kinds of learners.

Everything below ships in the current version of RiddR.

A shortcut for every language class

Language learners hear a text in the language they are studying. Bind one shortcut to French and another to Spanish, or leave it on Autodetect and SpeakIt switches when the text does.

Say it right

Teach RiddR how to say names, formulas and terms the way you would say them in class.

Listen while you read

Follow the text with your eyes while RiddR reads it aloud. Handy for long chapters, dense articles and anyone who finds reading on a screen tiring.

Every student’s pace

Slow a difficult passage down or speed up a revision read. RiddR remembers the speaking rate and volume each student sets.

Proofread by ear

Have RiddR read an essay back before handing it in, and listen for missing words and sentences that run on.

Keeps reading offline

No connection in the classroom? Pick a voice installed on the computer and RiddR keeps reading without the internet.

For schools

Privacy in the classroom

  • No account. Students install it and it works. There is nothing to sign up for and no logins to manage.

  • Local voices stay local. With a voice installed on the computer, the text never leaves the device.
  • Online voices say so. SpeakIt, the default voice, sends the selected text to its speech provider to produce the audio. Choose a device voice for anything that should stay in the room.
