Choose a voice
There isn’t one universal language list for every RiddR user. The languages and accents you can hear depend on the speech engine and voices you select.
- SpeakIt is RiddR’s built-in online engine. Its accepted language codes are listed below.
- Browser, operating-system, and additional extension voices have their own language coverage and availability.
Choose a voice in RiddR’s settings and check the languages offered for that engine. In the playground on the home page, select a voice and, when using SpeakIt, the language that matches your text.
SpeakIt languages
The current source accepts 53 codes across 46 language groups, including regional variants. These are the exact codes recognized by the engine, not a guarantee that every provider voice is always available.
What has been checked?
The list below was checked against RiddR’s source on October 1, 2026. English (en-US), Spanish (es), and German (de) were also verified with actual playback in Chrome. The remaining entries are source-declared support, not individual playback tests.

No matching language in the SpeakIt list. Other voices may still support it: check the voices available on your device.
SpeakIt requires an internet connection and sends the text being read to its online speech provider. See the privacy policy for more about speech processing.
Other voices
RiddR can also use voices exposed by Chrome, including voices supplied by your operating system or other compatible speech extensions. Their languages, accents, quality, and internet requirements vary. Installing a language in your operating system does not guarantee that a corresponding voice will appear in Chrome.
Check RiddR’s voice selector after installing a voice or language pack. Some device voices may work offline, but RiddR’s built-in SpeakIt engine does not. Do not assume a voice is local just because it appears in a browser menu.
Troubleshooting
The words have the wrong accent.
Choose a voice and language that match the text. For multilingual passages, try one language at a time. The home page playground calls SpeakIt directly with the language you choose; it does not run the extension’s automatic language detection.
A language code is rejected.
SpeakIt checks exact codes. For example, use es rather than es-ES, and de rather than de-DE. For a different browser voice, follow that voice’s own language tag instead.
My language is not in this list.
Look for another voice in RiddR’s settings. The list above describes SpeakIt, not every voice your browser can provide. A language appearing in an extension interface or language-name catalog is not, on its own, evidence of an available speech voice.
SpeakIt will not start.
Check your internet connection, try a short passage with a listed language code, and press Play again. If the online engine remains unavailable, select another voice. On a website, voice availability also depends on the browser exposing SpeakIt to the page.
Source: the SpeakIt language whitelist at revision e0e431f. This reference describes that implementation; online provider support may change independently.
