Getting started

You’re all set. Let’s hear something.

Three small steps take you from selected text to spoken words. It takes about a minute.

Your first listen

  1. Keep RiddR within reach

In Chrome, open the Extensions menu (the puzzle-piece icon) and pin RiddR to your toolbar.

  2. Select a few words

Open an article or any regular web page and highlight a paragraph. Or use the practice text below.

  3. Press Alt + R

Or click the RiddR toolbar icon. RiddR reads your selection aloud, and the popup gives you pause, stop and replay while you listen.

Practice here

Good reads don’t have to be read. Select this paragraph, press Alt and R, and let RiddR take it from here.

The shortcuts

Alt + R reads, Alt + P pauses and Alt + S stops. On a Mac, Alt is the Option key. If a shortcut is already taken, change it in Chrome’s extension keyboard-shortcut settings.

Make it yours

Right-click RiddR’s toolbar icon and choose Options. Pick a voice, set your preferred language, and adjust the speaking rate, pitch or volume. The controls and voices you see depend on the speech engine you choose.

SpeakIt, the built-in voice, uses an online speech service. For offline listening, choose a voice installed on your device. The samples on the home page are a quick preview; the extension itself gives you the full settings and your pronunciation rules.

Need a hand?

If nothing plays, try a short selection on a regular website, check your volume and the chosen voice, and make sure RiddR has access to the site. Chrome’s internal pages, the Chrome Web Store and some document viewers do not allow extensions to read their content.
